Drop-down list for companies

Reported by eesmyal | April 22nd, 2010 @ 07:46 PM

As a way to encourage companies to add themselves to the database, and to ensure consistent company name data, companies should only be allowed to list themselves as being involved in a project if they already have a company page that gets added to a drop-down list.

So a user could create a building page, add content, and then when it comes to adding companies involved, they would choose from a drop-down list of existing companies, with an option to add a new one if theirs isn't on the list. Once they add their company, it goes into the drop-down list. This creates a relational database where companies are then linked to projects. So clicking on a company in the list on a project page would take you to a page of all links to that company (ie: all the buildings they were involved in). Also, doing a search for that company name would yield all instances of of them on a map and a list view.

This same approach for companies could be taken for products and strategies.

This seems like a good way of getting extra information in, but in cases such as the DCS data entry it would have put too much of an extra burden on people doing the data entry. Non-company-affiliated editors need to be able to add information without having to necessarily create a company page.

As an alternative, what if the name autocompleted when you entered it (like on gmail when you enter an address), and if you enter in a name that isn't in the company database the system asks you if you would like to automatically create a new entry for the company (or maybe it just takes you straight to an item creation page with a notice about how it found you were entering a new company name) and encourages you to start an entry for the firm even if you don't have a lot of information to put in. Obviously if a new company entry is entered it would also have to check all of the existing project team entries to see if there are any entries that can be tied into the company.

I agree that this is a badly needed feature.
